Although Angus Whyte's colorful collection of stories is called "After Dinner Tales," I found them deliciously satisfying as a breakfast treat, preferably with a fresh scone and imported jam from a catlogue where all the prices are in euros.I confess I've known Angus for 30 years or so and, for those who may suspect that some of his wilder escapades are imagined or exaggerated, let me stop you right now and say you're wrong. What you read is what he is... a rare combination of spontaneity, lust, simple elegance, and openness, who has the ability to weave his life into story or weave story into his life---I'm not sure which. Each story is like a transparent crystal, rutilated and included, but polished smooth.
Angus did not have to go to an ashram to learn to follow his bliss. It seems to be in his DNA. (In fact, I'm almost surprised there wasn't a story about having cocktails with Joseph Campbell.)
Treat yourself to this unique and enjoyable read. If you're lucky, perhaps some of his magic will rub off!

Mr. Angus Whyte shares with us a number of hilarious stories, each with a life lesson, taken from his own life. Mr. Whyte has lived a fascinating life, shared with fascinating people, some of whom are quite famous. I loved this book from start to finish. It is beautifully written, witty, and always classy (even when the stories are a bit naughty!). I could not put the book down once I started. I cannot wait for the second set of stories to come out!
This connoisseur of life, Angus Whyte, has given us what the first of what we can only hope will be series of delights. Few os us can hope to live as outrageously as Angus, yet Oscar Wilde now has an uncloseted competitor. Angus will not be as prolific as Wilde, but Wilde was never as candid and as authentic as Whyte. A splendid read.
I read After Dinner Tales in two sittings. The stories gave me a Babbette's Feast feeling. I send wonder, amazement and gratitude to Angus Whyte. I expected a book of short stories. What I read was a humorous and clever memoir of a life lived to the fullest. Angus Whyte obviously knows that time is our greatest possession. Many of these stories are about love, found and lost. One of his lovers described Angus as "oversexed." He is certainly took advantage of what was possible.
His history of the western hemisphere "Spanish conquistadores traded Catholicism and syphilis for the New World's gold, tobacco, and chocolate--not exactly a fair trade." My favorite story was his memoir of his father.
Whether I am reading fiction or non-fiction, I crave a brilliance with words. Angus is a master crafter of words. I am looking forward to his next two volumes.
