I want to thank my sister for recommending this book and this series. I found this to be one of the strangest murder mysteries I have ever read, but then my sister is sort of strange herself (I mean this in a good way) so I should not have been surprised. On the other hand, I found that our local library only has about three or four to the many books in this series so I was forced to buy this one. Thank goodness it was a Kindle...I spend too much on books already.

I was absolutely fascinated and delighted with this work. For me it had a number of things going for it...all near and dear to my heart. First, it was a very well written work. Second, it was about cats. I am actually more of a dog person myself, but have had a number of outstanding cats throughout my life so I appreciate these independent and fascinating creatures. Third, there was a strong element of fantasy in this work and fantasy is one of my favorite genre.

A large male cat, Jo Grey by name, suddenly discovers he can think and speak like a human. He immediately witnesses a murder and so the story begins. As the tale progresses he meets another cant, a cute little thing by the name of Dolcie who has the same talents as Joe Grey. They team up to discover who is killing who and why. There is a third cat involved here...actually the third cat is a lady who discovers she can turn into a cat at will and back again to a cat...as needed.

The entire story is told from the viewpoint of the cats involved...humans here sort of act as `extras.' I found this to be fascinating. The books, in a way, reminded me of the fantasy classic "Tail Chasers Song." It was not as mystic as Tail Chaser but many of the elements were there. I must say that I agree with the reviewers who state that if you like the works of Rita Mae Brown and love cats, chances are pretty good you will enjoy this author's work. I will say that Murphy's writing is a bit stranger than Brown's and the reader needs to give the book a chance. I found after a couple of chapters I was able to get into the spirit of the book and everything sort of came together.

This is some unique writing and the premises of the stories are strange enough to be very appealing to me. I will continue with this series....cost be hanged.

Cat on the Edge A Joe Grey Mystery Joe Grey Mystery Series Shirley Rousseau Murphy 9780061056000 Books Reviews

I tried several times to get through the first chapter and just gave up. I'm not a fan of authors who spend 90% of the time describing the scene before moving the story along. To me, that's just a way to fill pages, and very aggravating. I don't need to know the color of every leaf on the trees, what the temperature is, blah blah blah.
I read all 20 books in a row. I could not get enough of these cats and their friends, both 4 and 2 legged. There is so much "catitude" and I just loved the cats' personalities, all of which are quite unique. The plots are well developed and quite different from each other. The cats enjoy causing and getting into trouble just like our kitties at home, but with far more skill. I keep wanting my own cat to talk to me when I pick him up!
What a wild and wonderful mystery this is! First I'd encountered Ms. Murphy's stories, but not the last. Place posh seaside village in Ca. Cast Joe Cat and Dulcie whose owners Clyde and Wilma respectively, have no knowledge of their cats' recent ability to both speak and read English. Witnessing a murder in the first pages, their lives are sought by the killer who'd recognized them. The killer also embodies the Welch mystique of knowing cats who have strange senses and can even shape-shift (as will happen with a third). The cats need to save their lives, arrange to have Clyde not be a fall guy for the murderer and discover how to live with their new roles in life. The writing is elegant, the story riveting there is actually much more involved with ultra luxury autos, off shore banking and counterfeiting. A charming story with multi-faceted interest a very enjoyable read.
I was a little hesitant on this (I got it off the BookBub email list) as I feared it would be cheesy and trite. SO NOT! Of course, I'm a cat lover, and the author nails the cats' point of view ... the magic is a little hazy, but that just adds to the intrigue. What a ripping good tail, er, tale. The mystery is believable and just a little bit obvious, but reading how the cats figure it out and what they do about it, I just absolutely loved it. The Kate Osborne character is astounding and while it should be completely unbelievable, it's not. The scene where Joe phones his "owner," Clyde is hilarious. And again, somehow I bought it. Beautiful writing, but always advances the story along. What a great read over the holidays in front of my cozy fireplace.

I believe this is the first one in the series and the best place to start, as it sets it all up. Can't wait to dive into the next one!
This first book in the series takes some time to describe the characters and the premise, but that doesn't interfere with the story moving forward. I was actually re-reading this book, because it had been mant years since I read it originally and it was the book our book club selected as an introduction to cat-centric fiction. I was surprised at how well it held over the years. Great start to a great series. I highly recommend the book and the series!
When I was looking for books to put on my , I ran into a few books that were deeply discounted or free (sometimes the first in a series of books they give in the format for free to get you hooked), so this was one of the books I picked up. I love cats, and I really enjoyed reading about the cat, Joe Grey, and his adventures after witnessing and murder and being on the run. It is definitely a fantasy-type book, as a couple of the cats can think and speak like a human, but I find this very entertaining. Also, the fact that a human can change into a cat from a spell also puts this into the Fantasy category. It's also a great little suspense book, and gives you all the right twists and turns to keep you interested and makes you want to read the rest of the books in the series. I think the author did a good job with this book.
