I wish I could give this a higher rating, I really do. It wasn't a bad book and the author has talent and potential, and I would be willing to try her future work. But I had some issues with this book. First, the positives:

-interesting premise that's a fairly unique twist on the post-apocalyptic genre
-atypical take on vampires
-Sloane can be pretty badass as a heroine without it seeming too over the top
-there's some good, exciting action packed and tension filled scenes
-racially diverse characters, which is very nice to see
-very few grammar mistakes or typos

Negatives:
-lukewarm romance, despite me liking the hero. The hero wasn't the problem, it was the way the romance was written. There was not enough real progression considering this is a trilogy, a bit of missing chemistry, and it came off as too childish for 17-20 year olds.
-there's a twist that I saw coming but I felt the reveal wasn't done well, and we didn't learn enough about the character it involved before it happened that justified it.
-not enough interactions between key characters and not enough backstory provided for some key characters. There's a lot of time spent on things that could have been shortened.
-it takes Sloane way too long to start trusting anyone. She sees things as too black and white for much of the book, when it should be obvious there's a lot more grey. It gets frustrating.

I wouldn't discourage anyone from trying the book out, I just couldn't give it a higher rating than this, but that's my personal opinion. Others do and probably will feel differently.

I have been looking forward to this book, it seems forever, but the sad part is I bought this book nearly a year ago and I've only just read it a few weeks ago. It's ridiculous, I know, but one thing leads to another and well here we are...

Three years after the Eclipse happened and vampires began to openly slaughter humans, the remaining survivors live in enclosed cities known as White sectors, while any vampire infested area is known as Red sectors. Seventeen year old Sloan McAllister is determined to find her twin brother no matter how many times she's been told he's dead. Once she's in the Red sector she encounters a young man who is much more than what he appears, but Sloan knows vampires are mindless animals who only live to kill and drink blood. So why is this guy talking, walking and acting like a human with his own set of fangs?

In the moment of a heartbeat this intriguing young man turns Sloan's world upside down by turning her into the very thing she despises, and taking her underground where vampires exist in a society much like human beings. Everything she believed she knew about vampires comes into question as she lives, trains, and goes to school among them. But as a vampire hunter, it is going to take a lot more than a handsome Captain to gain their trust.

The reason Aden turns Sloan will pave the way for this book and add a twist that will cause Sloan to have to choose between love and loyalty. I really loved the relationships between each character, though most seemed to just fill in a blank, there were others who become integral to the story and you can't help but root for them. I loved how Jones portrayed Sloan's struggle to be loyal to her new friends, but also to her tyrannical and cold hearted mother and sweetheart best friend, Leo. *lesigh*

I had my reservations about Sloan because she has a penchant for the dramatic and can be unappreciative at times. I do understand that turning into a vamp was at the bottom of her "must do before I die" list, but come on! I was glad to see that Aden wouldn't take her bs no matter how much he liked her and made sure she knew it. Ha! Serves you right, girl.

The Scarlet Dagger is told in first person, and I liked that Krystle Jones managed to make this an easy read for me. While it's not my favorite kind of writing style, I still managed to grasp the story and watch the events unfold through Sloan's eyes with no problem. What keeps this from being a four or five star book for is the fact that I saw the villain coming from page one. I blame myself though for reading the blurb to book two before even reading book one. *Facepalm*
Oh my Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood! This book is amazing! Why does it only have 600 ratings?! Like what?!

I have read so many cliché vampire books in the past few years, it's past the point of being funny. So I'll admit that I was super-mega-ultra skeptical to pick up another one.

But this is the real deal, guys. This book...is PERFECTION.

Before I get into all this, let me just say that the mere mentioning of Pittsburgh made me love this author ten times more. Like YES. Nobody ever picks Pittsburgh for dystopias, let alone a vampire dystopia.

Anyway, back to the book. So the main premise here is that approximately three years before the novel begins, an event called the Eclipse took place, and vampires basically led a full-fledged feeding frenzy (say that five times fast hehe) on the human population. After it was declared that the existence of vampires was an immediate threat to the remaining humans, our society roped off specified areas called White Sectors, where humans could live without the fear of being constantly tracked by feral blood-sucking monsters. Ain't nobody wantin' Bella Swan to eat their face off.

I've gotta say...I'm really starting to like this fusion of vampire and dystopia that's going on in YA literature right now. It's new and refreshing, with so many potential plot twists that haven't been explored yet.

As most of you know, I'm a huge fan of kick-ass female lead characters (as you can probably tell from the appropriately named bookshelf), so I fell in love with Sloane from the very first page. Her courage, tenacity, and bravery are pretty novel in a woman, and I love how despite her inner turmoil she still manages to maintain her humanity, her kindness, and her tendency to hope for something better.

Her relationships with the other characters are far from the cookie-cutter outline most vampire authors fall back on, especially her relationship with Aden Knight. Just...give me a moment here.

SO. HOT. I CAN'T EVEN.....

Aden Knight is the biggest enigma I've encountered thus far in my journey through the vampire genre. His position as a captain in the Emperor's imperial military academy is envious, sexy, and exudes so much power you can't help but bow at his feet. But at the same time, when he's with Sloane, he's an adorable, wounded, ordinary man who wants someone to hold on to when everything is said and done.

Even the supporting characters were all very well illustrated and constructed. Angel, Rook, Leo, even Aden's mom (d'awwww) were genuinely interesting. I found myself literally dying to learn more about every single one of them.

As most of you ALSO know, I'm a huge fan of action-oriented, character-driven fiction. And Jones gave me everything I asked for in this book. The action was non-stop, pulse-pounding. I read this book in one sitting, that's how irresistible it was to me! There was never a dull moment. Ever. And that is pretty damn impressive.

Let me just take a moment to say....dat ending though.

Absolutely perfect. I didn't see ANY of that coming. Well done, Krystle. Well done. *applause, applause, applause*

I will definitely continue this series. Moooooost definitely.
